ready or Not is a 2019 American black comedy horror thriller film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. The film stars Samara Weaving as a newlywed who becomes hunted by her spouse's family as part of their wedding night ritual. Mark O'Brien portrays her husband, with Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell as members of his family.
Plot:
Young brothers Alex and Daniel Le Domas witness the killing of their uncle Charles on his wedding night to their aunt Helene. Thirty years later, Alex—who has been estranged from his wealthy family for years—has returned home at the behest of his fiancée Grace, a former foster child eager to be part of Alex's family. Alex offers Grace a chance to abandon their wedding plans, but Grace refuses, and the pair are wed.
On the wedding night, Grace is invited to join the Le Domas family tradition, an initiation custom in which the family plays a game together. Participating in the tradition are Alex, his alcoholic brother Daniel, their father Tony, their mother Becky, Daniel's snobbish wife Charity, Alex's drug-addicted sister Emilie, Emilie's whiny husband Fitch Bradley, and the somber Helene. It is explained that Tony's great-grandfather Victor agreed to a deal with a man named Mr. Le Bail. Le Bail would help create the Le Domas fortune in exchange for the Le Domas following this tradition. Grace must draw a card from Le Bail's ornate wooden box and play the game written on the card. She draws "hide and seek." Grace leaves to hide in the estate while the Le Domas family, apart from Alex, arm themselves with antique weapons to hunt her down
At first irreverent, Grace witnesses Emilie accidentally killing one of the maids, believing it to be Grace. Alex explains that the "hide and seek" card is the only card which requires the family to kill the recipient. He did not tell her because he thought it unlikely that she would draw it. If the family fails to kill Grace by dawn, they believe that the entire family will die, per Victor's agreement with Le Bail. Alex directs Grace on how to escape the house while he goes to disable the security system. Grace evades the butler Stevens and escapes to the study, where she is discovered by Daniel. Daniel is unhappy with the family tradition and allows Grace to escape. Meanwhile, Alex is captured and restrained by the family
Grace escapes the house but is pursued into a barn by Emilie's young son Georgie. He shoots her in the hand, and Grace knocks him out. She then falls into a pit filled with the decaying corpses of the previous sacrifices. She climbs out and makes her way out of the property and into the woods. Stevens pursues her in a car and manages to capture her until Grace chokes him unconscious. Grace escapes in the car, which is quickly reported stolen and remotely disabled. Stevens catches up to Grace and tranquilizes her.
While being driven back to the property, Grace awakens and attacks Stevens, causing him to crash the car. She is again found by Daniel. He laments that he is unwilling to participate in the ritual, but that if he does not, he is risking the lives of his family. Daniel knocks Grace out and returns her to the house. Grace is restrained to a table and surrounded by the family, which prepares to sacrifice her. They drink from a ceremonial cup and start to vomit blood. Daniel releases Grace, revealing he non-lethally poisoned its contents. Charity, believing Daniel does not care if she dies, shoots him in the neck, causing him to bleed to Death
Grace knocks out Charity and Tony, inadvertently starts a fire with a broken lantern, and beats Becky to death with Le Bail's box. Alex escapes his restraints and sees Daniel's body before he finds Grace standing over Becky's corpse. Realizing that Grace no longer trusts him, Alex subdues Grace and alerts the others to her presence, accepting his role in the family. The group hails Satan as they restrain Grace on a table, and Alex prepares to stab Grace as dawn approaches. Grace digs her nails into Helene's hand, allowing her to move out of the way and be stabbed in the shoulder. Dawn breaks, but nothing happens, and the family believes that their tradition was a lie until Helene suddenly explodes. One by one, the remaining family members explode, and Grace rejects Alex's pleas for forgiveness before he dies. From the fireplace, Grace sees a vision of Mr. Le Bail nodding in approval.
Grace leaves the house and sits on the steps as the police arrive. Drenched in blood, Grace smokes a cigarette as the Le Domas mansion burns behind her. A policeman inquires what happened; Grace replies, "In-laws.
